A smiling woman stands against a bright red background, hugging a large red piñata shaped like a social media notification with a white heart and the number one on it. She’s wearing a red top with white trousers and looks joyful and relaxed. The image conveys warmth, connection, and the playful energy of social media done right, with the NotLuck logo displayed below her.

The Social Media Guide That Won’t Make You Want to Poke Your Eyes Out

October 17, 20255 min read

Hey you, scroll-stopper...

Are you feeling a bit ‘meh’ about your socials? Or maybe you're throwing posts at the algorithm gods and hoping for the best?

I can tell ya, you're not alone.

Social media is noisy - but it’s also one of the best ways to connect, convert, and actually build a brand that people remember and love. So, whether you're winging it or planning it down to the last emoji, here's our gloriously un-boring guide to getting social media right - NotLuck style.

Who TF Do You Think You’re Talking To?!

Before you start firing off double-barrelled Canva carousels, I want you to get clear on your dream humans.

Are they spreadsheet-loving CEOs who want everything in beige? Or are they chaotic creatives who’ll click on anything with glitter?

If your content speaks to everyone, it resonates with no one. Niche down, babe.

How to figure them out:

  • Stalk your insights

  • Ask your audience questions - use in-app tools like polls which are fun to use and in itself is a piece of content

  • Watch what people actually respond to (not what you think they want)

Then write posts about their answers. And here’s a nugget - make your posts sound like you’re talking just to them in the DMs.

Pick Your Platforms Like You Pick Your Friends

Let’s be honest, nobody’s got time to be on six platforms unless you’ve got a social media manager, a VA, and a bottle of espresso on drip.

Choose 2-3 platforms that:

  • Match your energy

  • Are where your audience actually hangs out

  • Let you show up in a way that feels good

For example

✅ if you're a coach with juicy insights and a face people trust, Instagram Stories + LinkedIn might be your dream team.

if you're product-based and have pretty things? Pinterest + Reels. Sorted.

Now, This Is A Story All About How...

I know an amazing small business founder who often gets stuck in post-and-ghost mode.

She had passion, offers, and SO many ideas - but no traction. Turns out, she was trying to be everywhere, posting everything, and sounding like everyone else.

So we simplified.

✨ We picked two platforms.

✨ We crafted posts in her actual voice (with personality, not “professional voice” pants).

✨ We leaned into what she loved creating.

✨ And we repurposed the hell out of every post.

Now she has content that sounds like her and her brand rather then a boring beige Barry and she’s much more likely to attract the clients she loves to work with because they’ll understand her vibe before they even speak. (Sorry Baz.x)

Content That Doesn’t Suck

Here’s the ding-darned truth: it doesn’t matter what you hear, you really don’t need to go viral. You just need to be valuable to the right people.

Your content should either:

  • Help

  • Entertain

  • Inspire

  • Or sell (but gently, with wine and eye contact)

Here are some ways to get real with it...

🎥 Show your process

📸 Share real moments

🗣 Tell a story (yes, even the messy ones)

😂 Don’t be afraid to be funny - you can bet your last burrito that humour connects faster than hashtags

But When Should I Post On Social Media?

A question that is asked a lot. And the answer is......consistently.

Not constantly. Not perfectly. Just consistently.

Create a content calendar that works with your life (not against it).

Batch your ideas. Schedule what you can. Leave room for spontaneous brilliance.

And if you fall off the wagon for a week (or three), don’t ghost - just come back with a bang and a bit of honesty. People love it.

Scheduling tools are worth their weight in gold for those who struggle with consistency, even better if it’s all in the same place as your customer data! Our NotLuck CRM system offers exactly this and it saves our clients loads of ‘what to post’ headaches!

Watch What’s Working

🫣 Don’t post blind.

Metrics are your mate - they tell you what your audience loves, ignores, saves, shares, and clicks on.

Check your:

  • Engagement rates (aka: are they vibing?)

  • Reach (are you showing up?)

  • Clicks (is your CTA doing anything?)

Notice what works and double down on that. Let go of what doesn’t - even if you liked it. (Yes, even the post with your favourite pun.)

Talk Back

Don’t just broadcast - interact.

It’s not called social media for nuthin’

That means replying to comments. DMing your new followers. Tagging people when you shout them out. It also means engaging on other people’s posts - and a fun fact is that if you have someone in a similar niche, they will appreciate your engagement and will likely reciprocate AND their followers will see your interactions and likely check out your profile if you offer what they enjoy.

Yes, the algorithm loves engagement - but more importantly, so do actual humans.

💡 TL;DR?

If you remember nothing else, remember this:

👉 Know your people

👉 Show up as you

👉 Be consistent

👉 Check your numbers

👉 Actually have fun with it
