I've been using a lot of AI tools over the past year. Most of them are good. Some are brilliant. But Cowork, the desktop tool from Anthropic (the team behind Claude), is the first one that's made me think: "This actually changes how I work."
Not just speeds things up. Actually changes the process.
What Is Cowork?
Cowork is a desktop application that gives Claude direct access to your files, your tools, and your workflow. Instead of copying and pasting text into a chat window and copying the response back out, Claude works with your actual files on your actual computer.
It's still in research preview, but we've been using it for a few weeks now and the potential is obvious.
What Makes It Different from ChatGPT or Regular Claude?
Regular AI chatbots are isolated. You type a question, you get an answer, and then you manually do whatever the answer suggests. There's a constant back-and-forth between the AI and your actual work.
Cowork sits in your workflow. It can read files you're working on, create new documents, analyse spreadsheets, search the web for research, interact with your calendar, your email, and other connected tools. It doesn't just tell you what to do. It helps you do it.
Think of it as the difference between asking someone for directions and having them actually walk with you.
How We're Using It at NotLuck
Proposals and documents. We describe what we need, Claude creates a full document in the right format, styled and structured. Not a draft in a chat window that we then have to format manually. An actual file, ready to send.
Data analysis. Drop a spreadsheet in, ask a question, get analysis. Charts, summaries, insights. Without opening Excel and writing formulas.
Content production. This blog post was drafted with Cowork. I outlined the key points, gave it the context, and Claude produced a first draft as a markdown file. I edited it from there. The whole process took a fraction of the usual time.
Client work. Setting up CRM systems, building automation workflows, writing email sequences, all of this benefits from an AI assistant that can work with files and produce deliverables directly.
Research. Need competitive analysis before a client call? Cowork can search the web, compile findings, and produce a summary document. All without leaving the application.
What's Genuinely Impressive
The thing that surprised me most is how well it handles complex, multi-step tasks. Not just "write me an email" (any AI can do that). More like "look at this spreadsheet of client data, identify the ones who haven't had contact in 30 days, draft personalised follow-up emails for each, and save them as a document."
That's a workflow. And Cowork handles it in minutes.
It also connects to other tools. Google Calendar, Gmail, Notion, Google Drive, and growing. This means it can check your schedule, find relevant documents, and factor in context from multiple sources.
Where It's Not Perfect (Yet)
It's still a research preview, and it shows in places. Setup requires some patience. Some integrations are still being built out. And like all AI tools, it occasionally gets things wrong, which is why you should always review its output.
It's also not a replacement for specialised tools. Your CRM is still your CRM. Your design tool is still your design tool. Cowork is the intelligent assistant that works across all of them.
Why This Matters for Small Businesses
For years, AI tools have been "interesting but not quite there." Good for simple tasks but not integrated enough to really change how you work.
Cowork feels like the bridge. It brings AI out of the chat window and into your actual workflow. For small businesses where everyone's wearing multiple hats and time is the scarcest resource, that's a significant shift.
Imagine having an assistant who can draft your proposals, analyse your data, write your content, research your competitors, and manage your admin, all from your desktop. That's not science fiction. That's what Cowork is building towards.
We're early adopters, and we're already seeing the benefits. If you're the kind of business owner who wants to stay ahead of the curve, this is worth paying attention to.
Getting Started
Cowork is available through the Claude desktop app. You'll need a Claude subscription, and some features require connecting your various tools and accounts.
If you want to see it in action, come along to one of our AI workshops in Nottingham. We're now including Cowork demonstrations as part of the hands-on sessions.
