Why Your Expensive Website Isn't Getting You Leads

You spent a decent chunk of money on your website. It looks brilliant. Your designer did a proper job. You launched it, posted about it, and then waited for the leads to roll in.

Still waiting?

Yeah. This is more common than you'd think. And it's not because the website is bad. It's usually because the website was built to look good rather than to generate business.

There's a difference. And it's an expensive one.

The Trophy Website Problem

A lot of web designers are exactly that: designers. They make beautiful things. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But a website isn't a piece of art. It's a business tool.

If your designer focused on aesthetics and didn't think about user journeys, conversion paths, call-to-action placement, page speed, or SEO, then you've got a trophy website. It looks great on your desktop. It wins approving nods from your mates. And it sits there doing absolutely nothing for your business.

The Usual Suspects

Here's what I typically find when a business comes to us saying "our website isn't working":

No traffic. The most obvious one. If nobody's visiting the site, it can't convert anyone. This usually means there's no SEO strategy, no content marketing, no advertising, and no local search presence.

Traffic but no conversions. People are visiting but not enquiring. This points to a conversion problem: unclear messaging, no calls to action, forms buried at the bottom of the page, or the site just doesn't convince them you're the right choice.

Wrong traffic. The site is ranking for keywords that bring the wrong kind of visitor. They're arriving, seeing it's not what they need, and leaving.

Terrible mobile experience. The site looks great on a widescreen monitor but is a nightmare on a phone. Since the majority of your visitors are on mobile, this is a massive problem.

No follow-up. Leads do enquire, but nothing happens. The form goes to an email that nobody checks regularly. There's no automated response. No CRM. No follow-up sequence. The lead goes cold before anyone replies.

How to Fix It (Without Starting Again)

The good news is you probably don't need a whole new website. You need to fix the strategy behind it.

Add clear CTAs on every page. "Get a Quote." "Book a Call." "Send a Message." Every page should guide the visitor toward the next step.

Fix the messaging. Lead with the customer's problem, not your company history. Nobody lands on your website wanting to know when you were founded. They want to know if you can solve their problem.

Set up tracking. Google Analytics (free) and Google Search Console (free) will tell you where your traffic comes from, what pages people visit, and where they leave. You can't fix what you can't measure.

Invest in SEO. Even basic on-page SEO, title tags, meta descriptions, heading structure, local keywords, can dramatically improve your search visibility.

Build a follow-up system. Connect your forms to a CRM. Set up instant automated responses. Build a follow-up sequence. Convert the leads that are already coming in before spending money chasing new ones.

The Real ROI Question

Here's how I'd think about it. If your website gets 500 visitors a month and converts 1% of them, you're getting 5 enquiries. If half of those become customers, you've got 2-3 new customers a month.

If you improve your conversion rate to 3% (which is very achievable with the changes above), that's 15 enquiries and potentially 7-8 customers. Same traffic. Triple the results.

That's the ROI of fixing a website's strategy. Not making it prettier. Making it smarter.

The Bottom Line

Your website should be your hardest-working employee. If it isn't generating leads, it's not doing its job. And the solution is usually simpler and cheaper than you think.

Before you throw more money at a redesign, fix what's behind the design. Strategy, SEO, conversions, follow-up. That's where the money is.
